Best live chat and website messaging for Canadian small businesses
Tidio and Intercom print USD-style stickers. Intercom’s official FAQ is USD only. HubSpot markets live chat as free. Drift redirected to Salesloft / 1mind with no public price. A widget is not a ticket queue.
Last updated 6 September 2026. About 16 minutes. Research from public vendor docs and CRA pages — not a hands-on lab test.
A Smithville site that needs a bubble in the corner does not need a bank’s conversational-marketing RFP. It needs a widget, a human (or bot) on the other end, and an honest sticker — in CAD if the vendor prints it. US “best live chat 2026” lists still sell Drift as if the self-serve card were on the shelf.
This comparison is four public stories: Tidio (USD-style conversation volume), Intercom (USD seats + Fin outcomes — official FAQ: USD only), Drift / Salesloft (redirected to Salesloft / 1mind, no sticker), and HubSpot Live Chat (official free widget on the free CRM). Live-chat and website-messaging prices checked against public vendor pages, 6 September 2026.
Who this page is for
- A Canadian SMB that wants a chat bubble on Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, or WordPress — not a 40-agent CX suite.
- An owner quoted “Intercom + Fin” who needs the official USD-only billing FAQ, not a blog’s CAD conversion.
- Someone still Googling Drift who needs the official Salesloft / 1mind redirect honesty.
- Not a help-desk RFP. Not a newsletter tool. Not legal advice on CASL or PIPEDA.
Snapshot (public pages, 6 September 2026)
None of the paid public cards print CAD. Intercom’s official FAQ is USD only. Tidio labels one add-on in USD. HubSpot markets the widget as free. Drift / Salesloft has no sticker. Widget vs inbox lines are from official pages, not a lab.
Tidio
- Published software price
- Free $0/mo — 50 billable conversations/month, 10 seats, live chat and ticketing. First 50 Lyro conversations are free (lifetime). First 100 Flows visitors reached are free. 7-day trial of paid features, no card; then the account drops to Free unless you upgrade.. Plus starts at $300/mo + monthly usage — custom billable conversations, departments, multiproject, custom branding, OpenAPI, custom seats, wire transfer. Premium is contact for pricing..
- Currency honesty
- tidio.com/pricing prints $24.17 / $49.17 / $300 with no CAD prefix. The compare table labels the no-branding add-on “16.67 USD/mo.” Treat the list as USD. Confirm currency and tax at checkout. Do not invent a CAD Tidio SKU or convert $24.17 into loonies.
- What the widget actually is
- Official FAQ: a billable conversation is a live chat, ticket, email, or social thread that includes a human-agent message. Unanswered visitor messages, Flows replies, and Lyro replies do not count. One thread is one billable conversation no matter how many messages.
- Canada honesty
- No CAD list. Conversation volume, not a Canadian region. PIPEDA is not hosting.
Intercom
- Published software price
- Essential $29/seat/mo on the billed-annually cards — Fin AI Agent, Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, public help center. Official FAQ: Essential starts at $29/seat/month on annual billing; 1 full-seat minimum. Advanced $85/seat/mo billed annually — multiple team Inboxes, Workflows builder, round-robin assignment, private and multilingual Help Center, 20 free Lite seats. Expert $132/seat/mo billed annually — SSO, HIPAA, SLAs, multibrand Messenger / Help Center, 50 free Lite seats. Fin AI Agent from $0.99 per Fin outcome on every listed plan. Official FAQ: charged once per conversation; an outcome is a confirmed resolution, no further help after Fin responds, a completed Procedure (including handoff), qualification, or disqualification. Not charged when the customer asks for a human or Fin escalates. Fin-only on an existing helpdesk: $0.99/outcome, no seats, minimum commitment (FAQ example: 50 outcomes).
- Currency honesty
- intercom.com/pricing prints unlabelled $. Official Pricing FAQs: “Intercom is billed in United States Dollars (USD) only. This applies across our whole platform, including seat pricing, additional usage charges, add-ons, and Premier Services. Right now, we can’t bill in any other currencies.” Do not invent a CAD Intercom SKU.
- What the widget actually is
- Official page: all plans include free, unlimited live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners, and tooltips. Pay-as-you-go for email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp, and Phone.
- Canada honesty
- Official FAQ: USD only. Tax FAQ exists; that is tax on SaaS, not client GST/HST.
Drift / Salesloft
- Published software price
- Official Salesloft Drift page: “We’ve transitioned from Drift to 1mind.” 1mind is marketed as feeding buyer signals into Salesloft’s Predictive Revenue System. That is a B2B sales-engagement stack, not a $25 website widget for a Smithville shop. No self-serve Drift SKU, no CAD list, and no published 1mind sticker on the official page retrieved for this research. Talk to Salesloft / 1mind if you were already on Drift. Do not paste a third-party “$100,000/year” as Salesloft’s list.
- Currency honesty
- drift.com/pricing redirected to salesloft.com/platform/drift on 6 September 2026. That Salesloft page does not print CAD or USD plan cards. This page does not invent a Drift or 1mind street price from a competitor blog.
- What the widget actually is
- Official page is a B2B AI chat-agent pitch into Salesloft Rhythm — not a printed SMB widget SKU.
- Canada honesty
- No self-serve Drift card. 1mind is a sales conversation. Not a Smithville $25 bubble.
HubSpot chat
- Published software price
- Official hubspot.com/products/crm/live-chat: “Free Live Chat Software.” FAQ: “You can get started with HubSpot’s live chat and chatbot builder for free with no credit card required.” No-code chatbot builder is included. Conversations land in HubSpot’s free CRM inbox — chats, notes, emails, tickets. The same FAQ: advanced automation and scale sit on premium Starter, Professional, and Enterprise editions of Marketing Hub (the FAQ links Marketing Hub Starter). This page does not invent a Service Hub seat dollar from a 2026 blog. Confirm the live hub card at checkout.
- Currency honesty
- The official live-chat product page does not print a CAD widget price because the tool is marketed as free. Paid HubSpot hubs on hubspot.com/pricing still bill in USD; GST/HST/PST/QST is added for Canadian addresses (existing HubSpot honesty). Do not invent a CAD chat SKU.
- What the widget actually is
- Free chat is a website widget on the free CRM — not a standalone help desk, and not a paid-hub commission story. Publisher interest later is on paid HubSpot, not the free widget. HubSpot branding and feature limits on free tools are the usual trade. Montreal NA3 residency is a paid-account hosting option, not a promise the widget stays in Ontario.
- Canada honesty
- HubSpot’s public pricing page bills in USD. GST/HST/PST/QST is added for Canadian addresses. HubSpot announced a Montreal data centre (NA3) on 4 February 2025. Paid accounts can see hosting location under Privacy & Consent → Data hosting.
Tidio — USD-style conversations, printed Free plan

Plus starts at $300/mo + monthly usage — custom billable conversations, departments, multiproject, custom branding, OpenAPI, custom seats, wire transfer. Premium is contact for pricing.. Lyro AI Agent standalone starts at $32.50/mo from 50 Lyro conversations (7-day trial). Flows standalone starts at $24.17/mo from 2,000 visitors reached. Remove Tidio branding: 16.67 USD/mo add-on on the compare table. Official FAQ: a billable conversation is a live chat, ticket, email, or social thread that includes a human-agent message. Unanswered visitor messages, Flows replies, and Lyro replies do not count. One thread is one billable conversation no matter how many messages. tidio.com/pricing prints $24.17 / $49.17 / $300 with no CAD prefix. The compare table labels the no-branding add-on “16.67 USD/mo.” Treat the list as USD. Confirm currency and tax at checkout. Do not invent a CAD Tidio SKU or convert $24.17 into loonies. Starter is the first paid bubble most shops hit — 100 billable conversations on the annual display. Growth is where automatic assignment starts. Do not paste a third-party “Starter $29 / Growth $59 / Plus $749” as this page’s list; the official cards retrieved for this research print $24.17 / $49.17 / $300. The ticket queue Tidio also sells is still a help desk job when the thread leaves the widget.

Intercom — USD seats, Fin is $0.99 per outcome
Official intercom.com/pricing (6 September 2026): Essential $29/seat/mo on the billed-annually cards — Fin AI Agent, Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, public help center. Official FAQ: Essential starts at $29/seat/month on annual billing; 1 full-seat minimum. Advanced $85/seat/mo billed annually — multiple team Inboxes, Workflows builder, round-robin assignment, private and multilingual Help Center, 20 free Lite seats. Copilot $29/agent/mo billed annually ($35 monthly) after 10 free Copilot and 10 AI Auto-translation conversations per agent/month. Pro add-on from $99/mo. Proactive Support Plus $99/mo including 500 messages. Official FAQ: 14-day free trial, no credit card, all features plus Fin and add-ons. There is no free plan. Early Stage program markets up to 93% off for eligible startups. intercom.com/pricing prints unlabelled $. Sources: https://www.intercom.com/pricing; https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/8344190-pricing-faqs.
Unlimited live chat is included on the paid seat — that is not a free plan. Official FAQ: there is no free plan. Essential at $29 USD/seat/month annual is the floor for a teammate who will answer the Messenger. Fin on top of an existing Zendesk or Freshdesk inbox is a different SKU ($0.99/outcome, no seats) and still lives next to help desk software.

Drift — official redirect, no sticker
Official path on 6 September 2026: Official Salesloft Drift page: “We’ve transitioned from Drift to 1mind.” 1mind is marketed as feeding buyer signals into Salesloft’s Predictive Revenue System. That is a B2B sales-engagement stack, not a $25 website widget for a Smithville shop. No self-serve Drift SKU, no CAD list, and no published 1mind sticker on the official page retrieved for this research. Talk to Salesloft / 1mind if you were already on Drift. Do not paste a third-party “$100,000/year” as Salesloft’s list. drift.com/pricing redirected to salesloft.com/platform/drift on 6 September 2026. That Salesloft page does not print CAD or USD plan cards. This page does not invent a Drift or 1mind street price from a competitor blog. Sources: https://www.drift.com/pricing/ → https://www.salesloft.com/platform/drift.
If a 2024 “best live chat” list still ranks Drift next to Tidio, that list is stale. Salesloft’s public page is a pipeline tool for B2B sellers, not a CAD widget. The CRM those “buyer signals” are supposed to feed is CRM.
Official site: Open Drift / Salesloft. Not an affiliate tracking link.

HubSpot announced a Montreal data centre (NA3) on 4 February 2025. Paid accounts can see hosting location under Privacy & Consent → Data hosting. If you already live in HubSpot, start here before you buy a second bubble. The pipeline those chats become is still CRM for Canadian small businesses. The site you paste the embed on is website builders.

- You were sold Messenger + Fin and will pay USD: Intercom Essential at $29/seat/month annual plus $0.99 per Fin outcome. Official FAQ: USD only. There is no free plan.
- Someone said “just get Drift”: read the Salesloft page. Drift is 1mind now. No public sticker. Not a Smithville widget.
- The thread needs assignment, SLAs, and a knowledge base after the visitor leaves: help desk software for Canadian small businesses.
- The chat created a deal, not a ticket: CRM for Canadian small businesses.
- You still need the public site to paste the embed: website builders for Canadian small businesses.
