Best business insurance for Canadian sole props and small businesses
Home policies usually exclude the business. Intact and Economical go through a broker. Zensurance prints starting examples. Sonnet, NEXT, and Square Insurance are not a Canadian commercial SKU.
Last updated 7 September 2026. About 16 minutes. Research from public vendor docs and CRA pages — not a hands-on lab test.
A Smithville sole prop does not need a US “best business insurance 2026” list because a blog ranked NEXT at $19 a month. They need to know when the home policy already said no, which product is CGL versus E&O versus cyber, and when the honest next step is a broker quote — not a guessed premium. US lists skip Intact’s home-based exclusion, skip Sonnet, and skip the certificate a contractor has to email before the job starts.
This comparison is what Canadian SMBs actually shop: Intact Insurance commercial and home-based add-on, Economical Insurance / Definity through a broker, Zensurance as an online brokerage, and Square One Insurance if the business still lives in the house — plus honesty on Sonnet Insurance, ERGO NEXT Insurance, and Square Insurance. Business insurance product scope checked against public Canadian insurer and broker pages, 7 September 2026. This is not a claims lab and not a quote.
Who this page is for
- A Canadian sole prop who still thinks the house policy covers the laptop, the client on the porch, or the Shopify order that goes wrong.
- Someone a general contractor, landlord, or client asked for a certificate of insurance before the job or the lease.
- Anyone who googled NEXT, Square Insurance, or Sonnet “business” and needs the official no.
- Not a $50-million construction wrap. Not legal advice on whether you must buy a policy.
Snapshot (public pages, 7 September 2026)
Product scope from official Canadian insurer and broker pages. Home policy is not a commercial SKU. NEXT and Square Insurance are not in this table because they are not Canadian commercial products on the pages cited here. Starting prices are vendor examples where printed — not your quote. Confirm the live wording. Not a claims lab.
Home policy only
- What you are actually buying
- The house, condo, or tenant policy you already have. Fine for the building. Not the business.
- How you buy it
- Your existing home insurer or broker.
- CGL / premises (printed)
- Usually excluded for business activities. Do not invent a CGL on a home wording.
- Professional / E&O (printed)
- Not a professional-liability policy.
- Cyber / privacy (printed)
- Not cyber insurance.
- Published premium
- Whatever the home policy already costs. Not a business SKU.
Intact home-based add-on
- What you are actually buying
- An endorsement on an Intact home policy for a business you run from that home.
- How you buy it
- Broker or Intact quote — say you need the home-based business add-on. Occupation list can change.
- CGL / premises (printed)
- Personal liability for unintentional property damage, advertising injury, or bodily injury from the home business.
- Professional / E&O (printed)
- Not a substitute for a commercial E&O if a client sues over advice or a deliverable.
- Cyber / privacy (printed)
- Not a cyber policy. Ask before you treat a home add-on as a data-breach response.
- Published premium
- Not printed on the Intact home-based page. Broker quote.
Intact commercial
- What you are actually buying
- Broker-placed commercial lines: CGL, E&O, umbrella, D&O, crime, tech/cyber wordings.
- How you buy it
- Independent broker. Intact prints 6,000+ offices. No self-serve premium on the hub.
- CGL / premises (printed)
- Official liability page: commercial general liability protects against claims for bodily or personal injuries, advertising liability, and property damage to third parties arising from operations, products, or the business premises. If sued, it would cover legal defence costs and indemnity to third parties.
- Professional / E&O (printed)
- Errors and omissions (professional liability) covers liability for negligence, errors and omissions while providing insured professional services, including legal fees whether or not you are liable. The professionals page names finance, legal, engineering, marketing, HR, and consulting.
- Cyber / privacy (printed)
- Technology specialty page: Intact offers Technology E&O, Cyber, and P&C wordings for software, IT services, electronics manufacturers, telecom, website design, and similar. Professionals page also lists privacy-breach help (prevention, reporting, notifications, recovery). Not a published cyber premium.
- Published premium
- Not printed on the Intact hub or liability pages. Broker quote.
Economical / Definity
- What you are actually buying
- Broker-placed commercial liability at Economical, which is becoming Definity.
- How you buy it
- Broker partners. The liability page does not print a premium.
- CGL / premises (printed)
- Official page: general liability for property damage, bodily injury, advertising injury, and personal injury.
- Professional / E&O (printed)
- Commercial errors and omissions listed on the liability page. Limits via the broker.
- Cyber / privacy (printed)
- Not printed as a standalone cyber SKU on the liability page retrieved here. Ask the broker.
- Published premium
- Not printed. Broker quote.
Zensurance
- What you are actually buying
- An online brokerage quote shopped across 50+ partner insurers. Zensurance is not the carrier.
- How you buy it
- Online application, then buy or talk to a licensed broker. COI often within 24 hours if they do not need more information.
- CGL / premises (printed)
- CGL for third-party property damage and bodily injury. Not mandatory to operate; often required as a COI.
- Professional / E&O (printed)
- Professional-liability page: covers client claims of financial loss from your service, plus negligence, misconduct, and failure to deliver as promised. Accountants in Ontario are required to carry professional liability to practise (vendor copy). Typical exclusions listed: criminal/dishonest/fraudulent acts, securities-act violations, cost guarantees or price estimates, incorrect profit estimates.
- Cyber / privacy (printed)
- Cyber page: incident-response hotline, legal/forensic/breach-management (notifications, crisis, credit monitoring), system restoration, system business interruption; social engineering optional. Ransomware / cyber extortion is not included by default in all packages — ask the assigned broker. E&O / Tech E&O is not a substitute for cyber (vendor FAQ).
- Published premium
- Vendor starting examples only — not your quote. Liability page: a basic general-liability policy starts at $450 per year with a $2 million coverage limit. Professional-liability page: a basic policy with a $100,000 limit is “approximately $250” annually; the most common limit pair named is $1M / $2M. Cyber page: a low (~$50K) cyber limit is typically added to professional liability for an additional $100–$200 / year; standalone approximately $750–$1K / year. Footer on the liability page: “Based on $125/yr select professional policy. Financing subject to conditions. Excludes taxes. Actual rates vary by business profile.”

When the home policy is not enough
Official home-based page: a standard home policy does not give personal liability or commercial property coverage for the business. The add-on can cover business property (equipment, furniture, tools, inventory, others’ property you are liable for, computers and licensed software, cell phones) on and off premises, business interruption (reduced income if operations are hit by loss to that property), and personal liability for unintentional property damage, advertising injury, or bodily injury from business activities. Eligible occupations can change; ask a broker.
Official home-business page: most Canadian home policies exclude business property and business activities. Square One lets you add customizable home-business coverages to a Square One home policy: business property (including detached structures, bailee’s property, data/papers, goods in transit, leased property), business interruption (extra expenses and income loss), and business liability (premises, employers’ liability, property-damage liability). This is Square One Insurance Services, not Square the payments company. Stay on a home-only policy only if there is no client in the house, no business stock, no advice you invoice for, and no one asking for a certificate. The week a contractor emails “COI before Tuesday” is the week a personal policy is no longer the product.
Intact — broker commercial, plus a home-based add-on
Official liability page: commercial general liability protects against claims for bodily or personal injuries, advertising liability, and property damage to third parties arising from operations, products, or the business premises. If sued, it would cover legal defence costs and indemnity to third parties. Errors and omissions (professional liability) covers liability for negligence, errors and omissions while providing insured professional services, including legal fees whether or not you are liable. The professionals page names finance, legal, engineering, marketing, HR, and consulting. Same liability page also lists commercial umbrella (additional limits above CGL), directors and officers / management liability, and crime (employee dishonesty, theft, fraud, optional social-engineering fraud). Liability EDGE is a 13-extension CGL package (employment practices, product recall, trademark, and more). Limits are chosen with a broker — this page does not invent a dollar limit.
Technology specialty page: Intact offers Technology E&O, Cyber, and P&C wordings for software, IT services, electronics manufacturers, telecom, website design, and similar. Professionals page also lists privacy-breach help (prevention, reporting, notifications, recovery). Not a published cyber premium. Intact sells business coverage through a network of more than 6,000 independent broker offices in Canada. The marketing pages retrieved 7 September 2026 do not print a CGL or E&O premium. A broker quote is the next step. Sources: business hub; liability; home-based; technology; professionals.
Use Intact when you already have a broker, when a client named a Canadian carrier, or when the home-based add-on matches an eligible occupation. Do not invent a $X CGL because a US blog published one.

Economical / Definity — commercial; Sonnet is not that page
economical.com business pages print “Economical is becoming Definity Insurance.” Same company family as Sonnet; commercial lines sit on Economical / Definity, not on sonnet.ca. Official liability page: general liability for property damage, bodily injury, advertising injury, and personal injury; commercial errors and omissions; pollution liability and more. FAQ copy: commercial liability can apply whether you run a small side-business from home or a multi-million-dollar corporation (slips and falls, product liability, damage to others’ property). Pricing and conditions go through broker partners — the page does not print a premium. Source: Economical liability.
sonnet.ca’s about page (retrieved 7 September 2026) describes Sonnet as a digital-first home and auto insurer in the Definity family: auto, home, condo, tenant, and landlord. Home quotes in B.C. and Alberta; home and auto bundles in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I. It does not list commercial general liability, professional liability, or cyber for a shop. Do not treat a Sonnet home policy as a business CGL. Source: Sonnet about.
Same Definity family, different door. Commercial liability is the Economical / Definity broker conversation. A Sonnet tenant or home quote is still a personal policy.

Zensurance — digital broker, printed starting examples
Official about page: Toronto-founded (2016) technology company and licensed-broker channel. Partner network of more than 50 insurance providers; pick coverages online or speak to a licensed broker; most policy documents and a certificate of insurance emailed within 24 hours pending more information. Zensurance is a brokerage, not the underwriter. Liability page: CGL for third-party property damage and bodily injury. Professional liability / E&O for claims alleging negligence or failure to deliver a service as promised. Directors and officers. Cyber for recovery costs after a cybercrime involving systems and customer data. Liability is not mandatory to operate, but contractors are often asked for a certificate of insurance before a contract.
Vendor starting examples only — not your quote. Actual rates vary by business profile.” The only GST/HST-adjacent line printed on the pages cited here is Zensurance’s “Excludes taxes.” Intact, Economical, and Square One marketing pages retrieved 7 September 2026 do not print a GST/HST amount on a premium. This page does not invent one. Sources: about; liability; professional liability; cyber.
Use Zensurance when you want an online first pass and a COI without phoning five offices. Read the carrier name on the certificate. The $450 / $250 / $125 lines are their published starting examples, not a promise for a contractor with claims history.
Official site: Open Zensurance. Not an affiliate tracking link.

Square One — home-business add-on, not Square the till
Official home-business page: most Canadian home policies exclude business property and business activities. Square One lets you add customizable home-business coverages to a Square One home policy: business property (including detached structures, bailee’s property, data/papers, goods in transit, leased property), business interruption (extra expenses and income loss), and business liability (premises, employers’ liability, property-damage liability). This is Square One Insurance Services, not Square the payments company. Vendor starting examples only: business property from $7/month; interruption from $8/month; liability from $7/month; adding all of those coverages starts at $22/month. Deductible can start as low as $250 (same as the home policy). Not a full commercial package for a shop that is not home-based. Source: Square One home business.
Useful when you already want (or have) a Square One home policy and the work still happens in that home. Not a job-site CGL. Not Square Payments, Square Insurance, or NEXT.

NEXT and Square Insurance — not Canadian commercial SKUs
nextinsurance.com (retrieved 7 September 2026) is ERGO NEXT. It prints “Licensed, U.S.-based advisors,” “Prices start at just $19/month for general liability,” and 50-state positioning. It is not a Canadian commercial SKU. Do not paste that $19 US starting price onto a Smithville sole prop. Source: nextinsurance.com.
Square’s Canadian site publishes how-to copy about insurance (for example, that landlords often want CGL). It does not sell a Square Insurance commercial policy for Canadian sellers on the pages retrieved 7 September 2026. US Square Payroll workers’-comp is a NEXT partnership — not a CA product. Do not confuse Square the payments company with Square One Insurance Services.
If a US list sold you NEXT general liability at $19 or a Square Insurance toggle in the Dashboard, that is a US stack. Canadian sellers still need a CA broker, a CA digital brokerage, or a CA home-business add-on.

When a broker quote is the real next step
This page compared published scope. It did not price your risk. Call or click a broker when any of these are true:
- A client, landlord, or general contractor wants a certificate of insurance with named limits.
- The home-based occupation list does not include what you actually do — or clients come to a shop that is not your house.
- You sell advice or a deliverable and the contract asks for professional liability / E&O.
- You store client data, run a till, or keep a site that takes cards — and you need cyber wording, not a hope that E&O covers a breach.
- You want Intact or Economical / Definity paper. Those doors are broker doors on the pages cited here.
The ledger, the contract, and the site
Book the premium in accounting software for Canada. The SOW or service agreement that demanded the certificate lives in contract management. The public site that collected the customer — and maybe the card data cyber would care about — is website builders for Canadian small businesses. Registering to charge tax is still how to register for GST/HST. None of those pages is this policy.
A practical pick
- Desk, laptop, no clients in the house, no COI request: confirm the home wording first. If it excludes the business — Intact’s page says it does — add a home-based rider (Intact or Square One) or stop guessing.
- Home-based and you already want Square One home paper: their printed $7 / $8 / $7 add-ons, or $22/month for all three. Still not a job-site CGL.
- Need a certificate this week for CGL and maybe E&O: Zensurance online, then read the carrier on the COI. Treat $450 / $250 as starting examples.
- Want Intact or Economical / Definity paper, or the risk is a shop / job site / commercial auto: call a broker. Those pages do not print the premium here.
- Advice or a deliverable: add E&O. CGL will not cover “you missed it in the spreadsheet.”
- Client data, a till, or a site that takes cards: ask for cyber. Intact technology / privacy-breach copy and Zensurance’s cyber page are the printed doors. E&O is not cyber.
- Googled Sonnet, NEXT, or Square Insurance for a Canadian shop: stop. Home/auto, US, and a how-to page respectively.
- The books: accounting. The contract that asked for the COI: contract management. The site: website builders. This page will not invent a premium or a coverage limit the issuer did not print.
